PAEAN provides a platform for where European Pagans and scholars studying Paganism can meet and exchange information. Going beyond the functionality of a mere mailing list, PAEAN not only offers the possibility to inform each other about news, conferences, publications, and so forth, but also provides information about who is who in the respective fields. We chose to put PAEAN on Facebook, then, to help Scholars and Pagans build their networks.
PAEAN caters for three kinds of relationships:
Scholar-to-scholar: International activity among scholars interested in Paganism is dominated by the Anglosaxon world. By exclusively focusing on Europe, PAEAN seeks to provide a forum for research on the European traditions in their full diversity. With this focus we also want to give less researched traditions like Slavic Paganism and Ásatrú more international attention.
Scholar-to-Pagan: PAEAN can help scholars locate individual Pagans and Pagan groups more easily, and make use of the information on meetings, rituals, publications, and so forth. By being members of PAEAN, Pagans show their openness to academia, and prinicipal willingness to partake in research activities. In return, by being a member of PAEAN, scholars show their principle willingness to disclose the information gathered in research to the Pagan community.
Pagan-to-Pagan: Even if there already is ample opportunity to come into contact with fellow Pagans, the pan-European focus of PAEAN may help to find Pagans with academic interests in other countries.
